~THE PERPETUAL QUEST for the PERFECT LIFE by Michelle Pace and Tammy Coons~ Review

questjacketSo if you have read Fury by Michelle Pace and Tammy Coons, then you know these ladies can write a great story.  What I didn’t expect from The Perpetual Quest for the Perfect Life was how much I would feel from the story.  The way in which Michelle and Tammy penned this story had a depth of soul to it that made the story more personal and viable. I found that there was a level of connectivity with the story. Even if certain events had not occurred in my life experience, I ‘got’ it.

Early on in the story, I was concerned with the number of characters being introduced.  I thought the book would read like an episode out of Days of Our Lives and be very soap opera’ish’.  I couldn’t have been more wrong.  There was nothing superficial or Hollywood about The Perpetual Quest.  The more I immersed myself in the story and got to know the characters, the more sense it made that all these characters would be so intricately tied to one another. Taking place in a small town, where everyone in the community knows each other, would not allow for these characters, to in a sense stand on their own; especially when a tragedy occurs. The further into the story I read, the more I relished in the inter-relationships of Nicole, Avery, Aaron, Shilah, Lauren, Jack, and Jules as well as Sean and Colin.  Whether intentional or by association, this group helped each other see that life comes with mountains and valleys. They helped each other move on from their insecurities and push forward for the love that they wanted and needed.

There were a couple of points in the story that I really would have liked to see more development. But maybe, just maybe, Michelle and Tammy are saving those moments for a future book. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. And if not, then we will have to draw our own conclusions of what may have happened.  Characters and where the story could go with them that I would have liked to see more of would be—Sandra and John, Colin, Jack, Avery and Shilah.  However, I think in order for that to have been achieved, the book would have been extremely lengthy and possibly too much of a good thing—so let’s keep those fingers crossed for another installment of the Jefferson Point community.

Overall this story is a wonderful read. There were a few editing misses but not major errors. For the most part, the characters were well developed and you got a sense of who they were, where they came from and where they were going. The story itself was heartfelt and sincere.  You really could relate to it and all the situations that occurred.  Secondary characters, were good and well thought out. They added some lightness and humor to the story to give it a lift when it might otherwise be a little flat.

The Perpetual Quest for the Perfect Life is not just a story. It offers you time to reflect and realize that life is short. You need to OWN IT AND LIVE IT!!!

Dr. Ryan Harper’s brutal slaying stuns the picturesque river town. High school football star, Prom King, and on his way to finishing his residency, Ryan was their golden child.

After a two-year struggle to care for their young son alone, his widow, Nicole, reluctantly returns to Jefferson Point. Her homecoming reopens old wounds, as Ryan’s family and friends struggle to adapt to life without his dynamic presence.

The last person Nicole expects to reconnect with is Aaron Foster, Ryan’s best man and reluctant keeper of his secrets.

With opinions circulating on Nicole’s post-Ryan existence, she must maneuver the rapids of past loves, new expectations, and haunting dreams of her fallen husband.

The Perpetual Quest for the Perfect Life is a frank story of questionable decisions, small town politics, and love after loss.

Excerpt:

“There you are.” He gave her a lopsided grin and advanced toward her. Her head was still spinning from the scene she’d just witnessed and the hours of drinking on a mostly empty stomach.

“Jason…” Tired of his crap, Nicole backed away. She stopped as she ran into something. Looking over her shoulder, she realized she’d backed up to a tree trunk. Further retreat wasn’t an option.

“Alone at last,” Jason slurred. The day of steady liquor consumption was finally catching up to him. She suspected he’d had a couple more shots since she’d left the barn.

“Look. Avery’s not here to watch you hit on me. What do you say we go have some barbeque?” She reached for his arm and he pulled it away, placing it on the tree trunk for support.

“And miss my chance to finally get you alone? No way.” Suddenly on high alert, Nic hadn’t expected Jason to actually attempt to seduce her. She’d assumed he’d been caught up in the game, trying to piss Avery off. He pressed his body against hers and she winced at the rough, prickly surface of the tree trunk through her clothes. His face was an inch from hers and she smelled the stench of whiskey on his breath. She considered his aggressiveness from their school days, and something Avery had once told her after she ended their engagement: Jason could be a dangerous drunk.

She opened her mouth to talk him down, and as she stumbled for what to say, he brought his lips down hard on hers. She felt teeth scrape her lip and she could taste her own blood. Panic gripped her and she struggled to push him away, but Jason had always been remarkably strong. He had one hand in her hair and the other fondled her breast. She tried to push him off several times, but it just seemed to get him more aroused. Finally, in desperation, she bit his tongue. He winced and yanked his face away from hers.

“Stop it, Jason! Get off of me.”

“Now you’re gonna play hard to get? Come on, Nic. I remember how much you like this.” The mouth was on her neck and his hand gripped her hair tighter, as his other hand moved past the button of her jeans.

“No, Jason! I said no.” Nicole’s voice was harsh as she batted at his hand. In response, he pulled her hair roughly, bringing tears of pain to her eyes. She cried out and his gaze went from her zipper back to her eyes. His grip on her softened and his eyes looked almost tender.

“Hey … it’s okay to be nervous.” He stroked her cheek. “It’s probably been a long time for you … I’ll try to be more gentle.”

At that instant, she saw movement in her peripheral vision, as something large sent Jason sprawling to the ground, taking several pieces of her hair with him. Nicole blinked in pain and shock to see Aaron looming over him, his hackles up, ready to fly into a rage.

“She said no.” Aaron’s voice was quiet, with a scary quality. Nicole knew that voice and that stance. Aaron was in full battle mode, and if she didn’t intercede, he would pummel Jason to a bloody pulp.

“Come on, Aaron. Let’s go back inside.” Nicole’s voice was forcibly calm, as if talking to a wild animal. Jason was on his feet and glaring at Aaron; they were squaring off.

I wasn’t always in love with Colton Calloway; I was in love with his younger brother, Kyle, first. Kyle was my first one true love, my first in every way.
Then, one stormy August night, he died, and the person I was died with him.

Colton didn’t teach me how to live. He didn’t heal the pain. He didn’t make it okay. He taught me how to hurt, how to not be okay, and, eventually, how to let go.

Exceprt

I meet his eyes and hold his gaze as he explores downward. I bite my lip when he begins up the swell of my ass. When I got in bed, I’d stripped off my jeans, so all I was wearing was a tiny yellow thong. A triangle of silk over my core, strings over my hips, a string down my crack. I took off my bra, too, so I only had on a tiny T-shirt, a fitted thing, blue cotton with a pocket over the right breast, a glittery purple heart on the pocket.

He follows the line of the waistband of my thong around my hip, his eyes locked on mine, and he slowly and deliberately cups my left cheek. I search his eyes, and see my emotions reflected back at me: conflicted desire.

“I forgive you,” he says, an ever-so-subtle smirking tilt to the side of his mouth. “After all, it was a really awesome dream.”

He explores the line of the string between my cheeks. I’m holding my breath, and I can’t seem to catch it. He slides his palm up the other side, then back down, caressing my thigh, then the other. God. Oh, god. Now up my spine, up my bare back, under the shirt. His fingers, his palm on my skin, tracing fire.

His fingers go between my arm and my rib, seeking access frontward. I shift my arm, slide my palm up his chest, hesitate at his shoulder, then do as I’ve wanted to do for so long, it seems, and scratch over the stubble on his jaw. This action gives him access, and he moves his hand around my ribs to brush the outside curve of my breast smashed against his chest.

“What are we doing here, Nell?” he asks, his voice his voice a raspy whisper.

I shake my head and lift one shoulder. “I have no idea. But I like it.”

“Me, too.” He pulls me closer, higher. I go with him, shifting so I’m entirely on my side, head propped up on one hand, leg slung over his thighs, free hand on his breastbone.

Now I’m exposed. My shirt is hiked up so the undersides of my breasts peek beneath the hem. I silently dare him, encourage him with my stillness, my steady gaze on his too-blue eyes.

Ohmigod. God. He takes the dare. Palm on my belly at first, I think he might go south, and I think he considers it, then moves up north to the hem of my shirt. I was already holding my breath, but my throat gets tighter, my lungs burn, my heart either stops beating or pounds wildly. I can’t decide which.

Then his rough and gentle and huge hand cradles my breast beneath the shirt. I haven’t taken a breath in at least thirty seconds. Oh, god, oh, god, ohmigod. His hand feels so amazing. Scratchy, hard. My breasts are fairly big, C-cups, almost a D, but he can palm one easily. His palm scrapes my nipple, and now my breath blasts in, rushing through me and making me dizzy.

“Colton…” I duck my head and bury my forehead on his shoulder.

“Look at me, Nell,” he commands, softly but firmly. I do. His eyes are hooded and serious. “Turning point, right here. You don’t want this, you have to tell me now. Get up and go. This’ll all be forgotten. I’ll be your friend. But say so now. ’Cause any further, we’re in it all the way.”

I gulp. I nod. I bite my lip and look away.

“God, fuck me. Don’t do that,” he says, his voice ragged.

I’m puzzled. “Do what?”

“Bite your lip. It drives me wild. Bite your lip, and it’s over. Your mouth is mine.” His voice is so rough now, so raw and raspy it vibrates against me and sizzles deep in my core.

“Good to know,” I whisper.

He moves his hand away. “Decide now, Nell. All in, you’re mine, or we pretend this never happened.”

“I’m yours?” My voice is soft and tremulous.

“You asking? Or telling?”

“I—Colton, I couldn’t forget…but we—” I cut myself off, knowing I’m an incoherent mess.

Unconsciously, I bite my lip again, and Colton growls.

“I fucking told you. Don’t…do…that. I can’t take it. My control is in shreds here, and you’re biting your lip again.”

“Why does it make you so crazy?” I ask, playing for time.

Time for what, I don’t know. I know what I want. But now…with Colton becoming the direct and commanding person again, I’m shy, unsure, insecure, afraid. I’m all over the damn place. Molesting him in his sleep, then unable to jump in when he makes it clear he wants me like I do him. I’m a lunatic, clearly.

“I don’t know,” he says. “It’s just a thing. You bite your lip, and I want to take that lip into my mouth and suck on it like a Popsicle. I want to lick your lips and bite them and kiss you until you’re fucking lost and gasping and puddled on the floor.”

Well…shit. I want that.

Nerves? Gone.

I feel my heart doing this weird thing, swelling, hammering, stuttering, aching, and I know I’ve decided.

I bite my lip, and it’s over.

“Fuck. You’re crazy, baby.” His voice is a feral snarl, spoken through clenched teeth.

I don’t even see him move. One second he’s over there, the next he’s slamming into me, lips crushing mine, and, true to his word, he takes my lower lip into his mouth and sucks on it, tongues it. I’m jarred and shocked by the sudden violence of his kiss, and then I melt as he sucks on my lip. And then I’m pure liquid beneath him, because he’s abruptly gentle, taking my face in his hands, gazing at me with our lips barely touching, and then he kisses me slowly and so thoroughly, so deeply, I’m just…lost. His mouth moves on mine, claims me, steals my heart with his lips, takes my body with his mouth.

We’d kissed before, and it was—every time—the best kiss I’d ever had. My heart clenches when I realize this includes, by a landslide, every kiss Kyle ever gave me. There’s just no comparison. That hurts, that does. It hurts so sweet, so deep, so strange, I just don’t know what to do with it.

This kiss…I’m gone. Gone. I know, in that moment, that I belong to him. It’s what he said: I’m his. How it happened, I don’t know. I really wish I did.

Title:  Always There

Genre:  Contemporary

Buy Link:  Click here to download to your Kindle now!

Synopsis:  For readers who loved The Five People You Meet in Heaven, For One More Day, or The Shack.

“People walked up the front steps of the funeral home, preparing themselves to see the grieving orphaned children of the woman who passed, but what did they find instead? The youngest orphaned child was snacking on a Quarter Pounder with cheese, drinking a medium Diet Coke, and laughing in a chair with her friends.”

In this fresh, poignant novel, Always There, Shelby Lynn LeeMaster grapples with her recent “orphaned” life and how to let down her guard to fully experience true love, allowing it in to her heart without fear. The mother, Betheny LeeMaster, struggles with dying before she could teach and guide her children into adulthood. The daughter cannot break from her own fears, while the mother cannot forgive herself for leaving her children too soon. The different narrators, the mother in Heaven and the daughter on Earth, tell their stories in alternating chapters. Can the two women reconcile their fears and remorse being worlds and lifetimes apart?

Eastman’s honesty explores the tragic ending to a mother-daughter relationship, revealing the pain a motherless daughter experiences. The two vantage points allow the reader to find a connection with the mother and/or the daughter, personalizing the loss that a dying mother and grieving daughter often face. The novel portrays the truth behind the death of a loved one, while glorifying the mystery of Heaven, proving that love does not die when a person does. The channels of love are still open, going in both directions. Love goes on when life does not. The novel bridges the tragic with the comedic, giving audiences a lighter, more enjoyable, sentimental read. You will laugh while you cry, and cry while you laugh, but in the end, you’ll hug your loved ones for dear life.

Review:

Have you ever read a book and when you finally read the last word of the book, you can feel your heart smile?  Always There by Carol Ann Albright-Eastman is that book. Every word in this book is filled with feelings from the heart.

Letting someone you love go whether through death or circumstance is never easy. Eastman brings both to the forefront of the story. So yes, tears will fall. However, there was never a time where I felt so overcome with sadness or despair. I always felt a ray of light. I always felt some aspect of love. And this is what I believe Eastman was really tying to define and convey throughout the entire book— all the facets of love.  You could certainly feel this as you read each page and each word.

Always There brings you on a journey of every emotion—anger, sadness, love, hope, desperation, joy, relief—the list could go on. What you didn’t feel was giving up on the story or the journey the story was taking you on. There was at least one character, but I would wager that there was likely more, that you absolutely made a connection to. And if there isn’t that character then you know someone who fits the vibe of one of those characters.

I enjoyed how Carol Ann Albright Eastman to difficult occurrences in our lives, such as death, and made them real. By this, I mean wrote about the parts of these difficult times that aren’t always so dark and consuming. In fact, every time one of my kids hands me their Kleenex, I get a smile on my face. Potluck dinners take on a whole new meaning. And the next time I disagree with my husband, I just might start singing to the tune of A Rhinestone Cowboy.

The concept of writing the book in the Here and There POV’s was so perfect. We know that we have always wondered about those we have lost and what they may now be doing wherever they have gone to. The characters from the HERE POV had me laughing more often than not. They also had me thinking about my grandmother and while I miss her with all my heart, I couldn’t help but giggle thinking about what she would be saying as she watched or found out about what has been going on in my life now.

There were times in the HERE POV that I got a little mixed up with some of the characters. But it did not take away form the story and it almost didn’t matter because the story went beyond individual characters.

Always There is one of those books where after you get done; there are so many things that run through your mind. There is so much in the book that transcends beyond the book and into our everyday lives. It’s in how we make choices (big or small), it’s in how we communicate and make sure the ones we love know exactly what we want them to know. It’s in how we choose to let things affect us or guide us. Most of all it is in how we love. Not just the person standing in front of us but how we continue to love those we have lost. How we use the love for them to love those that still surround us.

This amazing and beautiful story might break your heart a little but it will mend your heart. It will make your heart sing and it will grab hold of your heart hard. Always There makes you feel. I’m sure for each reader those feelings will be different in magnitude and in nature but you will not be exempt from feeling.

I am so incredibly proud of Carol Ann Albright Eastman for writing this story and taking that jump to hit publish. It is a story of the heart that needed to be written. It is a story that every reader will feel some connection to and therefore it is a must read. It is a story of living and loving for you through the love of others. It is a story of knowing when to let go and when to fight with everything you have for the love that you need and deserve.  D 5/5

carol ann albright-eastmanAbout the Author:

Carol Ann Albright-Eastman is a wife and mother of four, crazy, adorable, incorrigible, intelligent, kind, and athletic children.  She’s taught high school English for fifteen years. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English from The Ohio State University, a teaching license and a communications minor from the University of Akron, and holds a Master’s in Education from the University of Akron.

Eastman spends the majority of her time grading papers, reading, but not as voraciously as other “indie” authors and their devout followers, watching her sons play baseball (or whatever seasonal sport they’re in at the time), negotiating futilely with a toddler, and falling deeper in love with her husband every day.  Eastman is a motherless and fatherless daughter, but a day doesn’t go by that she doesn’t think of them
