Hey crew! it’s been busy around here. We’re today’s stop on the Can’t Go Home Blog Tour. Check out my review and enter the giveaway too.
Everyone has secrets; secrets meant to be kept—hidden away where nobody can discover the truth. Adrian O’Donnell (aka: Dre Donley) is no exception. Dre spins tales and half-truths like it’s his job, keeping the reality of his past buried deep within each lie he fabricates. On the other hand, Kathryn Howell is the exception to the rule. She’s a straight-shooter, a tell-it-like-it-is, no filter kind of girl.
Kathryn’s honesty and straightforwardness is the ultimate turn on for a guy like Dre. He’s never met someone so sincere, so full of truth and innocence. Their chemistry is unavoidable, their connection, magnetic. When Dre sets out to make Kathryn fall for him, he doesn’t realize the grave mistake he’s making. Kathryn’s strength and convictions do not falter, even for an irresistible man like Dre. When his past resurfaces, and the lies come tumbling forth, Kathryn must decide if his deceit and betrayal can be forgiven or if the damage is irreparable. Will the truth ultimately destroy the relationship that neither one of them could deny or even attempt to resist?
This novel is for mature readers only, due to language and sexual content.
Every once in a while you read a book, sit back and say hmm. This is one of those books that I did just that. Why? Because I am trying to figure out how Angelisa Stone came up with the idea for Dre’s character. I don’t think I have read any story with this premise to it. It was different. It put a little spin on the whole love and romance part of the book. And I found myself pondering what I would do if i found myself in a situation like Kathryn did. What would my heart say? What would my brain say?
I also appreciated that Stone did not make the story too angsty or sad given the situation the male mc, Dre is in. I think she was trying to make a point through his story and his situation. A situation that whether wealthy or middle class, you lose sight of things that should matter. At the same time i didn’t feel that Stone diminished her message with the humour. She wasn’t trying to bring world piece or anything. But I do feel that she had a a little message of stop and accept everything life gives us. Even the little things. Especially the little things. And also to live life on your terms not any one else’s.
I love the twists Stone added to the story. They were not predictable and fit well with the story. Her characters were funny and I felt they played off of each other well.
Some may find Kathryn frustrating in that for someone who was quite confident about some aspects of herself such as work and who she was, she was not when it came to matters of her heart and love. However, I found this fit what many women are like including myself. When it comes to our image or what may appeal to a person, we get a little timid or question the who, why and when aspects of life.
Dre is extremely confident, genuine and generous. Not to mention hot. His sense of humour was great and I think that is what gave him a little vulnerability. He hid behind his humour.
The supporting characters were great. Different from what you find in other books and that is what made them a hit for me. Especially Kathryn’s bestie Sydney.
I really enjoyed the balance of the story. Balance between the humor and the drama. Angelisa’s writing flows really well and you can feel that her writing is genuine– you can feel her personality in the words. Because of this the flow of the story is smooth, the language and style is not forced. The story also reads quickly and is perfect for a weekend read.
I can’t wait to read more from Angelisa Stone. I lok forward to reading more from her as she puts a little twist on the contemporary romance genre. D 4/5
Who is Angelisa Stone?
Angelisa Stone is a typical Midwestern wife and mom, frazzled by parenting and housework, and overwhelmed with sports schedules, doctor appointments, and three-dimensional creative projects due “tomorrow morning.” Angelisa dreams of white sandy beaches, clear-blue waters, and Midori coladas in hand, but realizes that her loving husband and four not-so-perfect children are her real dreams-come-true. Writing and reading are her passions, and she hopes (and prays with her fingers tightly crossed) that readers will find enjoyment and escape through her words and characters.
