It’s HB Heinzer Day here at Flirty and Dirty. Woot! Woot! The Blessed Tragedy Series is fast becoming one of my top rock series. The boys of BT- Colton, Jon and Travis not only hot but so much heart and they truly make more than the ladies panties melt. And we so cannot forget about Rain- lead in the band and kick ass not to mention absolutely gorgeous. We’ve got an author interview, interview with Colton and Rain, an excerpt and some teasers. We will also being giving away a copy of both Blessed Tragedy and Blessed Fate (which comes out June 18).
There have been many books about hot bad boy rockers. What made you decide to write about them too and how is yours different?
I never set out to write a rocker book. When I start any story, I start with the characters. It just so happened that I started to get the characters for the band members, so I wrote the story.
I’d like to think that mine is different in the sense that the focus isn’t on the band on stage and at work. I was raised that there’s a difference between the job and the person, and I wanted to show both sides.
Art of Dying is your muse for Blessed Tragedy and Blessed Fate right? Why them as opposed to a more commercial, known band?
Like I said, I started getting a feel for the characters. That night, one of the members of Art of Dying followed me on Twitter. I had never heard of them, so I went to their site. Not only did the music start helping the story come together, but I found one picture on their site that I couldn’t help but feel was Colton.
I was lucky enough to meet the entire band this month and I have to say I couldn’t be happier to use them as the muses for this series. They are the way I’d like to think the members of Blessed Tragedy are. When they come off the stage, they’re not celebrities. They’re a group of guys who want to have a good time.
There are many other more commercial bands that also played a part in the book, but none to the same degree. The biggest of those bands would be Shinedown. I love the way they interact with their fans and they are some of the best showmen in the business.
I love Rain. Why a female ‘front man’ for your series?
Because she told me that was her job? Seriously, I don’t plot out anything in my books before I start writing. I get a feel for a character, get myself in the zone and see what happens.
Women in front are powerful, amazing performers, especially in a hard rock band. With two books in the series behind me, I love the fact that she is badass enough to hang with the big dogs!
What do you want people to get from your writing? I mean, the BT series is quite different from your Bent series.
It is completely different. To me, the books are like real life with many different facets. With the Blessed Tragedy series, I think there will always be a focus on the band members’ struggle to have both a professional and a personal life while living in the spotlight. With Bent and the Back to Brooklyn series, it’s more laid back, low key and embraces the thought that there’s no place like home.
What do I want people to get from it? Honestly, an escape. And I think with the Blessed Tragedy series, I’d love for people to come out on the other side thinking about what it’s like for the entertainers who give up a huge piece of themselves for our sake. They don’t do it because they have to, they do it because they love to and there are times there are great prices to be paid for that.
Why did you want to become an author?
A lot of people have asked me this recently and my answer never gets any better. I’m really not sure. I don’t remember being obsessed with writing before the age of 15, but since then, it’s been a piece of me that I’m not able to give up.
What’s the hardest thing you find about writing?
Confidence. It’s terrifying to spend so much time with the characters and the story and then hit publish. With the third book coming out, it’s no easier than it was with the first. If anything, it’s harder now because people are used to the other books I’ve published and I have to make sure that I continue to grow.
What do your friends and family think about you writing?
They love it! There was a time I thought no one paid attention and they figured it was just another thing I was going to try and not finish. Actually, I know there were some who felt that way. Now, I have friends pimping me to anyone who’s around when we’re together (which is actually very uncomfortable for me) and my 80 year old grandmother is passing Bent around to her friends. I just thank my lucky stars it’s not Blessed Tragedy, I’m not sure I could handle them reading that one. If they do, I hope I never know!
Tell us one flirty thing and one dirty thing about HB Heinzer?
Hmm… I’m not a terribly flirty person, well not in the sense that I figure that’s your way of being sweet. Since I’m on the spot here, I’ll say that something flirty about me is the fact that, within my circle of friends, we’re all flirty. It doesn’t matter if it’s a man or woman, we all hug and kiss when we see one another. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean I kiss random strangers, but I am more likely to greet you with a hug than a handshake most of the time.
Something dirty is much easier. I am beyond obsessed with menage relationships involving two men. I think there’s something both sexy and amazingly sweet and sensual about two men who aren’t afraid to show their love for one another. Let me jump in and be the filling in that sandwich and I’d be a happy girl!
There you go crew HB Heinzer is definitely a flirty and dirty kind of chick.
Book 2 in the series and it rocks your heart. Here’s the thing. There has been many a book written with a band as the core of the story. What sets HB Heinzer’s series apart from the rest is the focus isn’t solely on the band but rather the people that make up the band. What I mean is each band member plays an integral part of the story. No one is in the shadows. In most other rock stories, the focus is on one member for the entire book and it is all about the romance. Don’t get me wrong, there is romance and it’s hot as all get out. Just saying the names Colton, Jon, or Travis will have ladies panting. So even though this is Colton and Rain’s story, the other guys are right there dealing with the evolution of Colton and Rain’s connection. They too must evolve and change along with Colton and Rain so that the pieces that are Blessed Tragedy remain interlocked. In the story when one member is dealing with something, all members are dealing with it.
Let me put the hotness aside—oh who am I kidding? HOT! HOT! HOT! Why does Blessed Fate have the ultimate hot factor? Because HB writes about rock guys that are so grounded and down to earth- even Jon. They are always there for one another and they truly feed off of one another. When one is down they all are down.
And the extra kick of heat is the front man. Only the front man is a front chick!!! Rain is the total package girl next-door badass rock goddess who is my fictional girl crush. She definitely is no Justin Bieber back up singer. She’s gorgeous but doesn’t flaunt it. She’s talented but works hard. She’s in love with Colton but denies it. Rain is kick as but she has heart and she has vulnerability. She has the power to bring a man to his knees yet she can be crushed.
What I also love about HB Heinzer’s writing is that it isn’t all angst and sex (and that’s some good book sex). She can write playful and fun. The banter between characters is funny as heck and you can envision people (if not yourself) shooting the breeze like her characters. There were numerous times, I found myself not just giggling but full on laughing till my side hurt just visualizing a scene she wrote about.
Heinzer’s characters are real and her story is more than a rock story. It’s about family, love, second chances, and moving forward. If you haven’t put this on your TBR, you need to and if it’s on your TBR bump it up cuz it’s coming to ya June 18th!!! D 4/5
If not for the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the house, I would have thought I was the first person awake. Granted, I had only slept for about an hour, so I wasn’t sure that counted as having slept at all, but I was up for the day. As I rounded the bottom of the massive staircase towards the kitchen, I saw Matt, Mike, and their dad sitting around the table in the breakfast nook.
“Good morning, Colton. Would you like some coffee?” Matt asked as he stood from his chair.
I motioned for him to sit. “If you tell me where the mugs are, I can grab it. Thanks.” I filled my own cup and then brought the carafe to the table to top off theirs. I figured it couldn’t hurt to go out of my way to help them since there was a high likelihood they were pissed at me for sleeping in Maddie’s room.
“How did you sleep?” Mike asked, eying me carefully. I could only imagine what he was thinking we had done under his father’s roof, days after their mother died. If I were in his shoes, I would have wanted to kill someone.
“Not much at all,” I admitted. “Your sister’s having a pretty rough time, so I spent most of the night rubbing her back and trying to get her back to sleep when the tears woke her.”
For the first time since I had sat at the table, Maddie’s dad looked up from the steaming coffee in front of him. “Thank you, Colton. You’re a good man to take care of her that way.” He patted me on the back, and I wondered how these could be the same people Rain always told me were judgmental and unwelcoming.
“Thank you, sir.” I felt my cheeks getting warm. Taking care of her wasn’t something that should embarrass me, but I didn’t like being called out on it. “I’m just doing what good friends do.”
Matt snorted, still glaring at me. “Yeah, friends. Is that what you’re calling it? Does that take away the need to stop sleeping around?”
“Matthew,” Mr. Neumann scolded, “you will behave yourself. What your sister does or doesn’t do is none of your business. If they have an unconventional relationship, that’s between—”
No matter how entertaining it was to watch Matt slink further under the table as their father ripped into him, I had to set the record straight. I narrowed my eyes on Matt, who was directly across the table from me. “Matt, I have never had sex with your sister. We are friends, nothing more. If it was up to me, yes, I would be one-hundred percent committed to her and only her, but that’s not what she wants. So last night, I was in her room as a friend, taking care of her like I have for the past five years. You can believe that or not, but there it is.”
I excused myself from the table. While they weren’t completely evil, nothing would ever put me in the mood to sit and listen to any of Maddie’s family cut her down. Jon and Travis were just coming up the stairs as I passed the basement door.
“Hey man, everything okay?” Jon asked, probably seeing the way my jaw was twitching.
“Yep. Great.” I lied. “I’m going to wake up Rain. There’s hot coffee out there.”
We are so excited to have Colton and Rain from Blessed Tragedy give us an interview today.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to chat with us.
It’s great to be here. HB told us you ladies were pretty much the cherry on her sundae, so how could we say no?
Seriously, Colton? You sound like my grandma. Thanks for inviting us to stop by!
Ok Rain, I just gotta know. What is it like to be the sole woman day in and day out with these hooligans, albeit hot as all get out hooligans? *winks and laughs*
Luckily, I’m not really the only woman. Angie’s pretty good about jumping on our bus and rescuing me when the testosterone level gets a bit too high in the bus or we’ll jump in the truck and leave them all behind for a while.
Flip side of that coin is I have a nearly unlimited supply of hot men to look at, and who wouldn’t like that?
Hey now, there’d better only be one hot guy you’re looking at!
(rolling her eyes) Oh, please. You mean to tell me you never look at any other women? As long as I’m looking, you know I’m still interested and you know you’re the only one I ever see naked.
Yeah, now that we got it through to Jon that no one needs to see his fuzzy ass strutting through the bus.
Have you guys been in the studio again and Rain have you done any writing for an upcoming album?
We have been working on some new stuff. We’re working part of this summer, but then we’ll be hitting the studio, hopefully the new CD will come out by Christmas.
I’ve done a bit of writing, but I’m not sure if any of it will wind up on an album. I don’t have the experience these guys have, but they’re helping me figure out what works and what doesn’t. Maybe somewhere down the road it’ll work out.
Don’t listen to her. She’s amazing when she lets it all out. Jon’s threatened to toss my lyric journals into the burning barrel because she’s better at writing what we need.
He threatened to throw your journals in the burning barrel because we’re not a bubble gum pop boy band. You had some seriously sappy shit in there!
True. But that’s changed recently, hasn’t it?
I’ll give you that.
Rain, how do you think the band is perceived with you being the ‘front man’? I mean we’re talking rock not teen pop so you definitely have a different audience.
I think there are some who have an issue with it, but that just makes me work harder. A lot of people think a chick can’t command the stage with music like ours, so I set out every night to show them how wrong they are. As we get bigger, I think it’s gotten easier because I’ve already proven myself time and time again.
Colton, the thing you love most about Rain? The thing you could do without?
(Rain leans back in her chair, crossing her arms)
Did she put you up to this? (he laughs as he leans over to kiss her) She knows I hate this question because there’s no right answer. If I’m being honest, the first thing that comes to mind is her hot little body, but that’s incredibly shallow. If I say her huge heart, people think I’m being a sap and the guys give me a hard time when it’s published. So I’m going to take the safe way out and say everything. I love everything about my beautiful wife. Except for the fact that she’s kinda scary in the morning. Looks like Medusa with her hair all over the place and her demeanor isn’t much better before coffee.
Rain, the thing you love most about Colton? The thing you could do without?
I love how persistent and dedicated he is. When he wants something, he doesn’t give up on it when it’s hard. God, that sounds lame after his whole little speech about everything he loves about me, isn’t it? I would have said everything too, but now it would look like I was stealing his answer.
Something I could do without… If I had realized that he has some freaky aversion to sleep, I might have reconsidered marrying him. When we’re out on the road, I can kind of see it because it’s never comfortable, but I could stay in bed all day when we’re home and he’s up at the butt-crack of dawn. Freaking annoying.
Okay, I know you two are newlyweds and all that shit, but you’re going to put these girls into a diabetic coma with the syrupy sweet crap. Are you ladies as ready to puke as I am? Seriously, this is the shit I put up with every day lately.
*blushes* ladies he’s absolutely gorgeous. And let me tell you, I just wanna run my hands through his hair. Did I mention gorgeous. *giggles and fans self* Hey Jon since you’ve dropped in why not answer a couple of questions for us.
Sure, at least that’ll spare you from listening to those two spout off about how in love they are.
So what’s the deal with you still being single? I figure I might as well jump right in with this one.
What’s up with everyone bagging on me for being single? I see no point in settling down right now. I’m not home often enough to build a solid relationship and it takes a special type of woman to sit at home while we’re out on the road and not worry about me screwing everything with tits. Why? You interested in the job? I might think about making an exception for you….
*D moves just a little closer to Jon* What’s it been like with these two finally admitting what we’ve known all along?
At first I thought it’d be great because I wouldn’t have to listen to Colton bitch about Rain’s stupid ass rules. And Rain, it was a really stupid rule, even you have to admit that.
Are you guys ever going to shut up about that? It really isn’t that stupid. Would you want to date someone who you spend 24/7 with?
Not talking about me. We’re talking about you and pretty boy over there.
You really do need a woman, you know that? Someone to keep your cocky ass in line.
Rain, you had your turn. Now, these beautiful women want to talk to me. (turns away from Rain) Sorry about that.
*grinning like a fool*
Other than the fact that they’re sickeningly in love and we all have to see it, it’s been great. Well, and Rain has apparently decided that it’s time for the rest of us to settle down and get married. She’s a regular little matchmaker.
Do you think being a drummer, you are not recognized enough? I mean I’m all about the drummer but that’s just me. *Smiles*
Are you kidding me? I get recognized plenty, even more now that Colton’s off the market. Everyone loves a drummer because they know that we can keep a good rhythm no matter what we’re doing.
What’s next for Blessed Tragedy?
We’re doing a small tour this summer and then spending the rest of it back home. We’re going to take a little time off, do some local shows and record some new material. After that, who knows!
All right, I’m afraid to ask this one but one flirty thing about you and one dirty thing about you?
What’s so scary about that? Afraid you’ll like what I have to say?
*gasps and actually nods yes*
I’m not a flirty guy. Never really had to be.
See what I mean! He needs a woman to beat that out of him! Jesus, Jon, think highly of yourself much?
Not conceited, baby. I’m convinced. (winks)
When you’re not being a cocky ass, you can actually be really sweet. Girls, he tries to hide it, but Jon actually has a huge heart.
Colton, you think you can give her something to do with that mouth other than talk? I’m trying to have a serious discussion with not one but two gorgeous ladies.
So, where were we?
Ahh, yes. Well, not sure if it’s what you’re looking for, but when I am with a woman, I enjoy taking care of her. I think that’s part of why I don’t feel the need to be with anyone when we’re on the road. I don’t want to think about the time I’m missing out showing her that she’s my queen because I’m trapped on a bus with a bunch of sweating men.
And something dirty?
This is what you’ve been waiting for, isn’t it? I don’t talk very often about my dirty side, especially not around people I have to live with. Let’s just say I can be very dirty when I want to be. Even dirtier when I know it will lead to getting clean later.
Thanks for chatting with us. It was a blast. And Jon I [D] might wanna apply for that position *winks*
With the exception of three years spent in the middle of Nebraska, H.B. Heinzer has called southern Wisconsin home. During that time in Nebraska, she imagined one of her favorite authors living on the far western edge of the county, just south of the highway. At the time, becoming a novelist was a distant dream for her. Now, she is the author living in that location. Ironically, she later found out that same favorite author lives just outside the town HB lived in for the first eighteen years of her life.
Now, HB lives in the middle of nowhere but still close enough to the city to not feel isolated. It’s the perfect place to let her two kids run and explore their huge yard, teach them about the food chain as they prepare their first-ever garden and debate building a chicken coop. It’s one of those dreams that is only possible thanks to the amazing opportunities that have come through writing.
