If You Dare by A.R. Torre ~ Brittany’s New Review~

If You Dare by A.R. Torre
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If You Dare marks the third book in the Deanna
Madden series by A.R. Torre. I have to say that if you’ve made it this far
in the series then you already have an idea of whether or not these books
are your cup of tea. As I stated in my review of the previous book in the
series, Do Not Disturb (also my favorite in the series), these books
operate very much like a procedural with the format being similar from

The book starts off with Deanna waking up in the
middle of her apartment with no recent memory of what has happened. We
know that some kind of crime has been committed, but no idea what. Similar
to the other books in the series, If You Dare flips between 1st person
narrative from Deanna’s POV as well as 3rd person narrative told from a
detective’s POV. This book also flips back and forth between the past and
the present as both we the reader and Deanna try to work through the
events that have occurred.

This book was a strong 4 star read for
me. Part of the reason for that was that I had the “twist” figured out
relativity early on in the book. This obviously did not detract from the
writing at all, but it did take some of the fun away from it. The other
thing was I as the reader had an idea in my head of how I wanted this to
end. Did it end this way? No. Does that fact make the book bad? Absolutely
not, but when you get your heart set on something it can sometimes be a
hard pill to swallow when you turn that last page and realize that that’s
not how it’s all going to go down.

The final note from the author
alluded to the possibility of there being more Deanna down the road, but
as for right now this is supposed to be it in the series. I can honestly
say that I’m glad I went on this journey with Torre. She gave me a truly
original story idea and kept me entertained through three books. Not every
author can do that. The writing is sharp and the characters are original
and enthralling. If you’re looking for something a little dark and so far
outside the box it’s in the next zip code, then I truly recommend you try
this series. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
