Music is my muse. I put together playlists for every story I write, and let the songs pull me into the character’s minds. Work of Art is an intense emotional story and the playlist reflects that. I love it when I find a song that’s so true to the character that I feel like they are singing the song. Marianas Trench’s song, Ever After does that for me with Max from Work of Art. He’s an passionate an dramatic guy and the way the lyrics are sung by Josh Ramsey make them sting even more:

Apologies, I’m not myself but I can guarantee
That when I get back,
you won’t believe that you know me well
Don’t want to think about it
I’m fuckin’ tired of getting sick about it
Now stand back up and be a man about it
And fight for something, fight for something

I’ve probably listened to this song hundreds of times while writing his scenes. Here are the lines Max sings to Ava:

Don’t you move
Can’t you stay where you are, just for now
I could be your perfect disaster
You could my ever after

Love it..that song is Max’s anthem. I’m not sure I could write like I do without music. It puts me in the zone…it’s my writing drug, and I’m hooked.
I love it when readers tell me what songs they think of when they read my stories. What’s your favorite book-song connection.
